Vanity Five

HOMAGE TO PICASSO (2004

At first I was inspired / To recreate the desecration
Of an upright piano / By Metzger and relations

Then, when I had saved / And scraped the sound of thunder
Thrust it through the ceiling / And broke the neck in blunder

I noticed I was noticed / And one notices that so quickly
That I continued the destruction / And my blood ran so thickly

I had hacked into some anger / With no element of rage
A distracted way of screaming / Nothing written a page

I was famous for the shards / I was noted for the splinters
A hundred lost guitars / In just three English winters

I was challenged to explain / How such barbarity was art
But no answer ever came / To touch the bourgeois heart

I was accused and stood elected / Empty show-biz flash
How could I have suspected / I was developing panache?

By the time I’d reasoned it / I’d lost my mind – alas – so
How could I have known / It was a homage to Picasso?
